Restroom Romance

An animated love story that is spoken through graffiti gives us a closer look at what really goes on behind closed bathroom doors, teaching us that even vandals can reveal themselves through their art.

Final Project Treatment/Schedule

My idea will be similar to that of Toy Story, but will be based on the lives of bathroom wall graffiti and the ways in which the drawings interact with one another when people are not inhabiting the restroom. The varying subjects of my film will include the relationship between a girl and boy stick figure and the relationship they have (as they are both originally from opposite bathrooms). Instead of dialogue I will use words that have been drawn on the wall to fly into the frame and create a dialogue amongst the two characters, that is, when I’m trying to convey something body language can’t do on it’s own.

The film will open with a real life girl using a tube of lipstick to draw a stick-girl on the bathroom mirror. Once the real girl exits the bathroom, the bathroom will turn into an animated world and the stick-girl will come alive. She will start to “get ready” by perfecting her drawn image by borrowing from other drawings next to her that aren’t alive. The scene continues with the girl climbing along the walls and finding her way into the boys bathroom where she meets the stick-boy and a humorous, though sweet, relationship will ensue. Common vulgar words that would be found in a bathroom will fly into the frame but will be diminished/destroyed by other drawing fragments. These same vulgar words will come together and animate as one, with some of the words destroying certain letters that belong to each vulgar word, as to form a new word that is relevant to the scene at hand. Obviously, I will need to think of certain words that I will be able to turn into other words.

As of now, I would like to set the scene to the song “Like Swimming” by The Foals. It is a rather short song that is completely instrumental so I believe it will fit well to the scene. Towards the end someone will walk into the bathroom and notice the drawings on the wall and they will take a pen and add their own drawing to the scene, therefore suggesting the collaboration that goes into such a thing as menial as bathroom graffiti. What that person draws will be something that ties the entire animation together, giving the film a solid conclusion. The storyline is something I’m still planning out, however, the approach I’ve just described is pretty solid in my mind.

I will hand draw most of the stick figure images and the words, scan them into the computer, rotoscope the details if need be, and then move them into after effects with my background images. The background images will be filmed and then imported into photoshop where the details will be tweaked so it can be imported into after effects. I will most likely parent the stick figure limbs and such so I can easily move the figures throughout the space of the scene with ease. The title of the final film is still up for consideration.
